
The All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) completed two years of governance in West Bengal on 20 May 2013. The following are the projex plans taken up by the government in the last two years.
Manufacturing Projects
According to a West Bengal government communiqué, the state has received investment proposals worth Rs 1.12 lakh crore since May 2011.
In the manufacturing sector, the state received three large project proposals. The first one was from JSW Bengal Steel to set up a 10 million-tonne unit at Salboni in West Midnapur district at a total cost of Rs 35,000 crore. The second proposal was from ACC to set up a Rs 700 crore cement unit at Kharagpur and the third proposal was from Ultra Tech for setting up a Rs 331 crore cement unit in Hooghly.
West Bengal also received investment proposals worth Rs 2,250 crore in the information technology (IT) sector in March 2013. Companies like Tata Consultancy Services, ITC Infotech, Cognizant and Wipro have committed investments in the state.
To attract more investment in the IT sector, the state government announced the West Bengal Policy on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), 2012 and West Bengal ICT Incentive Scheme, 2012.
The Trinamool government has given approval for setting up two Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMCs) to be developed at Naihati in North 24 Parganas district and Falta in South 24 Parganas district on PPP basis.
Housing Projects
The West Bengal government has taken up construction of 60,000 houses under the Gitanjali, Adhikar and Destitute Housing Scheme.
Higher Education Projects
A Rs 298 crore has been granted for the development of Aliah University Campus at Rajarhat and Gorachand Road. Aliah University has received 20 acres of land at Rajarhat New Town Complex from HIDCO for the campus extension. Further, in February 2013, the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone of Minority Medical College at in South 24 Parganas.
The First Women University in Eastern India is being set up at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas. West Bengal State assembly passed the Diamond Harbour
Women's University Bill, 2012 in December 2012. Additionally, the state government intends to set up 42 new Government General Degree Colleges and two new Government Engineering Colleges are being set up at Purulia and Cooch Behar.
As of May 2013, construction of 62 new ITIs and 36 new Polytechnics were going on in the state.
Healthcare Projects
In December 2011, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced setting up of 35 Super Speciality Hospitals in 11 districts including Murshidabad, Malda and South 24 Parganas.
Tourism Projects
West Bengal is implementing India’s largest PPP Model for tourism infrastructure. In Phase-I, eight projects are being developed on PPP basis with a cumulative investment of Rs 3,280 crore. The Gajoldoba Tourism Park Project, with an investment of Rs 1,500 crore, is the biggest amongst these projects. It is being implemented on DBFOT basis and the bidding process is underway.
Power Projects
The state government is planning to set up 100 MW wind power project at Dadan Patra Bar near Mandarmoni in East Midnapore. Further, the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) has taken up detailed survey and preparation of DPR for conventional hydro power stations like 125 MW Farakka Barrage hydro project, 36 MW Rammam stage-1 project, 24 MW Rammam Ultimate project and 225 MW Teesta Low Dam project.
WBSEDCL has also launched a detailed survey for 1,000 MW Turga Pumped Storage project and 900 MW Bandhu Pumped Storage project in the Ayodha Hills area of Purulia district.
Irrigation Projects
The state irrigation department has finalized DPRs of 136 irrigation projects spread across the 18 districts of the state and recently got the clearance from the state’s finance department to spend a total amount of Rs 555.67 crore on these projects.
Infrastructure Projects
5,160 km of rural roads are being constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Another 6,144 km of rural roads has also been approved.
The state government has initiated the process of setting up two deep sea ports at Sagar Island and Rosulpur on PPP mode in collaboration with the Railway, the state government and the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT).
The new T2 integrated terminal at Kolkata’s NITB (New Integrated Terminal Building) at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, commenced operations in March 2013.
Mamata Banerjee Chief Minister of West Bengal, inaugurated the tunneling work of East-West Metro Corridor project in February 2012, marking the commencement of work on the Rs 4,874 crore metro project.
