WELSPUN ENERGY
emerging as the largest player in Solar Power

Welspun Energy commissioned its 50 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in Jodhpur Rajasthan on 12 March 2013. Welspun had won the 50 MW solar project under Batch-II of Phase-1 of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).

Welspun’s Jodhpur solar power project was completed in two phases. A 15 MW solar power unit was commissioned in January 2013 while two units of 20 MW and 15 MW were commissioned on 12 March 2013.

Other then the Rajasthan solar power plant, Welspun has solar energy projects in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh with a total energy capacity of 480 MW. The project coming up in Madhya Pradesh, with a capacity of 130 MW will be the largest solar project developed by any company in India. It is scheduled to be commissioned by end of 2013.

Welspun has already developed 250 MW of solar power projects in India and aims to put up an additional capacity of 750 MW through solar power projects.

Solar power installed capacity currently accounts for less than 1 per cent of India's total installed capacity-1.22 GW compared with the 211 GW installed capacity of all sources combined. As a long term plan India is expected to expand its solar power capacity by 20 GW till 2022.

Physical Target set for the 12th Five Year Plan is 10,000 MW from Grid Interactive Solar and 1000 MWe from Solar Off-Grid Applications.

The Ministry for New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has stated that the Batch I of the Phase-2 of JNNSM, which includes off-grid projects, will start from 1 April 2013 as envisaged. The tenders inviting bids for 750 MW of solar photovoltaic projects will start by April end or May first week

I believe India has got its policy framework right and the JNNSM has set examples for the rest of the world to follow. We are seeing healthy growth in both wind and solar energy generation, more so in solar. The industry is moving towards grid parity at a fairly quick pace.
