Sun shines on Gujarat


Gujarat is the first state to permit private developers to set up rooftop solar plants in the state. Karnataka followed. In December 2012, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd (IREDA) awarded 67 solar photovoltaic (PV) projects with a total capacity of 77.8 MW under the first phase of the National Solar Mission.

In the first phase the government intends to develop 100 MW through roof-top and small solar programmes. In the second phase plans are afoot to develop 1650 MW in 2013-14.

During the three-day Vibrant Gujarat Investment mela, it was reported that a record 17,790 MoUs have been signed. An increase of 112 per cent when compared to the 8,380 MoUs signed in 2011. Of the total MoUs signed, 4,417 MoUs were by SME companies.

During the Investors' meet, the Maruti chief disclosed the company's exciting investment plans in Gujart. India's number one car producer, Maruti Suzuki is all set to go ahead with its mega investment plan in Gujarat. The company intends to produce around 250000 cars per annum in the state. The cars manufactured in the state will be used to serve the Western India markets and overseas markets.

McCain Foods India Pvt. Ltd. proposes to expand its frozen food plant capacity in Mehsana, Gujarat. According to company sources, fresh investment of around Rs 372 crore will be spent in increasing its potato farm acreage in the state.


Manufacturing News


Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd. (NFCL) has commenced work on its urea plant expansion project. The company intends to spend around Rs 4,500 crore to increase the urea manufacturing capacity from the existing 1.3 million tonne per annum to 2.0 million tonne per annum. The major EPC contract has been awarded to Technimont. The recent amendment to the fertiliser policy made the company to take up the expansion plans. NFCL is now waiting for gas linkages.

Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has chalked out Rs 1,800 crore expansion plans to jack up its cement manufacturing capacity to 21 million tonne per annum from the current 17 million tonne per annum.


Infrastructure News

President inaugurates 95% completed Kolkata Airport Terminal

On 20 January 2013, the President of India dedicated the new Kolkata Airport Terminal. The 2,500 crore airport modernisation programme was carried out by ITD Cementation under the ageis of Airport Authority of India. The airport terminal is expected to be fully functional by March 2013.

Reliance Communications expanding network

On 16 January 2013, Reliance Communications Ltd. signed Rs 5,481 crore eight-year Eastern and Southern India network management contract with Alcatel-Lucent. A similar contract is expected to be signed with Erisson to manage the Northen and Western region.


Energy News

JSW Energy gets Green Signal

The 240 MW maiden hydro power project of JSW Energy gets environmental clearance after five years of announcing the project. The project was cleared by the state government in 2007. The run-of-the-river project is being set up on the Ravi river in Himachal Pradesh.

Big Capex plans of ONGC & UCIL

India's largest oil and gas company, ONGC has drawn up very ambitious projex plans for the 12th Plan. The Oil company intends to take up around 44 oil and gas exploration project and invest to the tune of Rs 86,000 crore.

Uranium Corporation of India Ltd. has already drawn up plans to expand its Tummalapalle project capacity in Andhra Pradesh. The on going project mine-cumprocessing project at Tummalapalle is expected to be commissioned shortly.


Realty News


Tata Housing has singed an MoU with the Gujarat government for investing Rs 3,500 crore to build affordable houses in Ahmedabad. The company intends to build around 6,000 homes across 100 acres of land.

GVK opts out of NHAI Highway in MP

Right on the back of GMR walking out of the largest highway project, GVK another AP based infrastructure company informed NHAI its intensions to walkout of four-laning of the two-lane Shivpuri, Dewas highway in Madhya Pradesh that was awarded to it in January 2012. Both the companies sited almost the same reasons - delay in getting environment clearances from the owner NHAI. Though NHAI has refuted these charges, it is true that a number of projects have either not taken off or have been stuck for want of clearances from the environment ministry.

Utkal Orissa refinery start delayed to March

Utkal Alumina International, a wholly-owned unit of Hindalco Industries has reported delay in commissioning its 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) alumina refinery in Orissa. The new project, which was to be completed by January 2013 is now expected to go on production by March 2013.

Hindalco's bauxite mining in the state, which was scheduled to start in October 2012, has also been delayed and may start by the end of this month, Mishra said. The company initially aims to mine 4.3 to 4.4 mtpa of bauxite for the refinery, though it has permission to mine8.5 million tonnes.

Delays hit 3 mega power projects in the Konkan region

Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MahaGenco) to scrap two coal-based power projects of 1,980 Mw each. Following the tepid response the company got for its bids floated in July 2012, the state owned unit agreed to drop the plan to develop these projects in JV format and offer the same to private parties under case-II bidding. Under this route, Mahavitaran, the expected power procurer, will invite bids for the execution of the projects.

The two coal-based thermal power projects whose implemetation has come under cloud because of non availability of coal are Dhopawe project in Ratnagiri and Dondiachia in Dhule District.

Another project in the Konkan region of Maharasthra was in the news because of land issues. The Supreme Court of India has sought reply from Tata Power and the Government of Maharashtra about the alleged irregularities in the acquisition of land and non-compliance with environmental laws. Tata Power is setting up a 1600 MW project in Raigad district of the state.

Earlier in April 2012, the HC had dismissed a PIL filed by five farmers opposing the 1,200-acre land acquisition by the state for Tata Power's Rs 8,00 crore coastal power plant as the project was for public purpose of augmenting the power supply to Mumbai.

Tata Power on its part, has clarified that 67% of the people affected have not made any complaints and there habilitation package offered by the company was more than what is required under the National Resettlement Policy or followed by way of practice.

JSW's WB Steel Project a non-starter?

In the meanwhile, JSW has reported no progress in its proposed 10 million tpa steel plant in West Bengal. The company signed an MoU for the project in 2007. Along with the steel plant, JSW intends to set up a 1,620 MW captive power plant. The Rs 35,000 crore mega project has been stuck following the clampdown on mining activities in Odisha. Without the assured iron ore supply, the company will not be able to sign the supplementary agreement, the present West Bengal is asking for from JSW to go ahead with the project.
