Telangana, which came into existence on 2 June 2014, completed six months last week. Despite the political hiccups, the state has managed to win a couple of mega projects in the last six months. So far, the state has attracted fresh projex worth Rs 15,999 crore, including Rs 8,400 crore projex from private investors.
Mega projects proposed to be set up in the state include Jai Raj Ispat’s steel plant coming up at Chintarevula, in Mahaboob Nagar district. The Rs 2,000 crore project will have the capacity to produce Pig iron, Mild steel ingots and billets, and TMT bars and is supported by a 30 MW coal-based power unit and a 50 MW waste heat recovery-based power unit.
Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages has announced its intention to locate one of the two bottling plants it wants to set up in South India, in the new state. The project is estimated to cost Rs 1,000 crore.
The newly formed state has also attracted 30 pharma projects worth over Rs 1,300 crore. Notably, 16 of these projects are coming up in Medak district. Emmennar Pharma is setting up a Rs 911 crore bulk drugs & intermediates project at Hatnoora, in Medak district.
SMS Pharmaceuticals has announced plans to expand capacities at two of its facilities; one at Bachupally, in Ranga Reddy district; and the other at Kazipally, in Medak district. Both the projects will be implemented with an investment of Rs 30 crore each.
Sai Shakthi Pharma is setting up a bulk drugs unit with a capacity of 300 tonne per month at Kondapally village, in Mahaboob Nagar district. The project is estimated to cost Rs 60 crore.
Encouraged by the response of pharma companies, the Telangana government recently proposed to set up India's largest integrated pharma city spread over 11,000 acre near Hyderabad.
The power-starved state saw announcements of power projects with a combined capacity of 4,113 MW. Of these 1,113 MW are solar power projects. Telangana State Power Generation Corporation is setting up a 1,080 MW (4 x 270 MW) coal-based power project at Manuguru, in Khammam district. The project will be set up with an investment of Rs 4,752 crore.
Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) is setting up a 1,000 MW solar park at Ghattu mandal, in Mahaboob Nagar district. The project is being co-promoted by Solar Energy Corporation of India.
Ikea India, a subsidiary of Swedish furniture retailer Ikea AB, will also set up its first store in Hyderabad, for which it has signed an MoU with the Telangana government.
In its maiden budget, presented on 5 November 2014, the state government said that it would spend about Rs 10,000 crore alone on improving the road network in two years, while proposing Rs 4,000 crore in the current year. It has also proposed to establish a land bank of around five lakh acre of government land suitable for locating industries.
Within six months of coming into existence, the Telangana government has also announced its new industrial policy framework identifying 14 thrust areas and plans to develop six industrial corridors. Simultaneously, a bill was also introduced in the State Assembly to enact the Telangana State Industrial Project Approval and Self-certification System (TS-iPASS) that would be a "single window" for clearing all investment proposals.
