Kochi Metro rail services and Water Metro services will be fully powered by solar by 2024.
Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) currently meets more than 50 percent of its electricity requirement through its solar energy plants. Currently KMRL is generating around 11 MW energy through its various solar plants.
Water Metro project requires around eight MW energy for the functioning and the required power would be generated from various projects aided by government.
KMRL is considering setting up of a solar power plant on 45 acre in Kasaragod as part of its goal to attain 100 percent energy self-sufficiency. The plant will be set up on a vacant plot.
In August 2022, KMRL inaugurated a 655 kW plant in its Muttom yard increasing its power generation to 10.5 MW. With this plant Kochi Metro has become the company that generates 58 percent of its total electricity demand from solar power.
For the Water Metro project, KMRL is going to launch five hybrid boats which can be operated using electricity and diesel in Phase-I and more boats will be added to the fleet later.
