On 24 January, 2024, Deputy Chief Minister DK ShiavKumar announced that the Karnataka government is committed to completing the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project in the state.
The government has submitted a detailed project report (DPR) and carried out a survey to identify the forest and revenue land that will be submerged in Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Ramanagar districts. The state government is in the process to obtain approvals for the project.
The Mekedatu multi-purpose (drinking and power) project involves building a balancing reservoir to store water near Kanakapura in Ramanagara district. The project is aimed at ensuring drinking water for Bengaluru and neighbouring areas.
