Oil PSU HPCL has commissioned India's first solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) system for green hydrogen at the HP Green R&D Centre in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This revolutionary technology generates pure green hydrogen, using power from a captive solar plus wind plant.
As a unique feature, this SOE system does not rely on rare earth materials, with the capability to reduce energy consumption by 20-30 percent compared to other electrolysers. This is considered to be a significant step in the Green Hydrogen Mission.
Led by this move, HP Green R&D Centre will carry out research in the areas of utilisation of steam/waste heat from refineries for hydrogen generation, carbon capture through co-electrolysis producing syn-gas and e-fuels and high temperature hydrogen for further downstream applications.
