The government is planning to develop the container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust as a fully ‘Smart Port’ within one year. This was announced by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal alongside the 34th anniversary of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), held in Mumbai on 25 May, 2023.

JNPA will be a fully electronically connected system to deliver improved services, and the Ministry further plans to develop major ports in the country into smart ports going forward, to match global standards.

The Minister informed that JNPA will soon place orders for the setting up of two green parks at its facility.

Under the port-led industrialisation initiatives, JNPA has witnessed 29 industrial units coming up in its special economic zone (SEZ) under the Sagarmala Project, developed on 277.38 hectares of freehold land by the JN Port.

JNPA, the country's biggest container port by volumes handled, has completed 34 years of operations. It has posted a record growth in container traffic at 6.05 million TEUs in FY23, a growth of 6.4 percent year-on-year.
