The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) plans to build co-working centres at three locations, and has shortlisted CIT Nagar, Anna Nagar, and Kolathur for these centres.
These centres planned by would be eqipped with high-speed internet to dedicated workstations, meeting rooms, and fully equipped libraries, and would offer cabins with three-seaters and above, fixed desks, flex desks, and meeting rooms. The co-working places planned by the government will be started at 30 crore, with facilities of high standard.
These will cater to entrepreneurs and startups, freelancers, and professionals including writers, designers, consultants, as well as remote workers, as it will save on overhead costs of a traditional space. Even individuals working and preparing for competitive examinations will have access to a library where they can study.
The CMDA is planning to explore different models, such as public-private partnerships to ensure efficient and sustainable operations. Besides, networking events, workshops, and social gatherings will be held. Last year the seat absorption by the co-working centres was 19,000.
These coworking centres are intended to revitalise underutilised spaces within the city, and would contribute to the overall economic development of the area. Further, these facilities will have good connectivity to ensure accessibility to a range of users.
