Wind Energy in India: Suzlon Turbines on the move


Suzlon Energy, India’s largest Wind Power turbine supplier, was in the news not once but twice in the last week of January 2013. The company bagged two major contracts to set up wind energy farms.

Suzlon Energy signed a contract to supply wind turbines of 21.75 MW with Sri Kumarswamy Mineral Exports on 28 January 2013. The wind farm will be set in Dindigul and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu by March 2013. Kumarswamy Mineral spokesperson shared with ProjectsToday that the work on the project is underway and power generation is expected to commence from April 2013.

Suzlon Energy bagged another order on 30 January 2013, from Orange Renewable Power to supply 24 units of wind turbine generators totaling 50.4 MW for Orange’s proposed wind farm in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

To top it, Suzlon Energy also secured an overseas contract on 2 February 2013 to supply and set up 66 turbines of 2.1 MW each in a wind farm in South Africa.

Since November 2012, Suzlon has bagged four domestic contracts with a total wind energy capacity of 112.05 MW. The company the top player in the wind energy sector of India with around 7,500 MW installed capacity across eight states.


Major Project Developments of the week

  • NHPC synchronises unit-I of Teesta Low Dam Project Stage-III with GRID.
  • NTPC allowed to re-tender cooling tower at its Nabinagar plant by the Supreme Court.
  • Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) will invest Rs 750 crore over four years to modernize its Ranchi facility.
  • Aditya Birla Nuvo will invest Rs 4,000 crore in its existing Urea plant in Uttar Pradesh, increasing capacity by 3,850 tpd.
  • Nagarjuna Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd (NFCL) will set up a third urea unit worth Rs 4,500 crore with a capacity of 1.3 million tpa at its Kakinada fertiliser plant.
  • Unity Infraprojects was awarded Rs 235 crore contract in Solapur, Maharashtra for construction of roads by the Solapur Municipal Corporation.
  • Malabar Gold and Diamonds will invest Rs 1,000 crore to expand its branches from 80 to 120 branches.
  • The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited bids for construction works in KC-4 and KC-5 of Kochi metro rail project.
  • The Everything About (EA) Water Group will invest Rs 1,000 crore in Gujarat to provide water recycling and desalination solutions in Gujarat and to set up a design and engineering institute in Ahmedabad.
  • The Chhattisgarh government considering scrapping Indiabulls Powers 1,320 MW power project at Bhaiyathan. The project has been stuck since five years as the Gidhmuri and Paturia captive coal blocks failed to receive forest clearance.
  • The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) cleared foreign direct investment (FDI) proposals worth Rs 280 crore. They were,

    - IvyCap Venture’s proposal to allow NRI investments through the normal banking channel,
    - Spanco Power Distribution’s proposal for downstream investments,
    - Wipro Limited to transfer shares by way of swap to a demerger of non-IT activities and
    - GPX India to issue equity shares to foreign collaborators against import of capital goods.
  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T) construction unit secured new orders totalling Rs 1,401 crore in various business segments in January 2013.They were,

    - Rs 605 crore orders in Power Transmission and Distribution sector, including one from Power Grid Corp. of India for the extension substations at Dharamjayagarh, Jabalpur, Bina, Indore and Aurangabad,
    - Civil works at the Sindhudurg airport in Maharashtra,
    - Infrastructure facilities at an air base in Uttar Pradesh and
    - To design and construct a special airport systems in West Asia.
  • Shriram EPC secured multiple contracts totalling Rs 367 crore. They were,

    - Rs 234 crore order from Hutti Gold Mines to construct a circular shaft,
    - Gujarat Urban Development Company’s order to supply and fix pipes and erect and commission pumping stations, a conventional water treatment plant and related facilities,
    - To establish intake wells, water storage and distribution lines in Kayalpattanam Municipality, Tamil Nadu     and
    - Kerala Feeds’s Rs 30.3 crore order for setting up a cattle-feed plant in Kozhikode.
