Industrial production growth eases to 3.8 percent in September
The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for the month of September 2017 eased to 3.8 percent as compared to a growth of five percent posted in the month of September 2016.
The General Index stood at 122.7 for September 2017. Sector-wise, the indices of industrial production for mining, manufacturing and electricity stood at 94.6, 125.1 and 150.5 respectively in September 2017. These sectors posted a growth rate of 7.9 percent, 3.4 percent and 3.4 percent respectively when compared to a year ago.
The cumulative growth rate for General Index in April-September 2017 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 2.5 percent. Also, mining, manufacturing and electricity sector registered a growth rate of 3.9 percent, 1.9 percent and 5.7 percent respectively during April-September 2017 over the corresponding period of 2016.
Of the 23 industry groups, 11 have shown positive growth in September 2017 as compared to same period a year ago. Of these, industry group ‘Manufacture of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products’ recorded the highest positive growth of 26.4 percent followed ‘Manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products’ recording 13.2 percent growth and ‘Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ with 13.1 percent growth.
The industry group ‘Other manufacturing’ has posted the highest negative growth of -27.1 percent followed by -23.1 percent in ‘Manufacture of tobacco products’ and -19.2 percent in ‘Manufacture of electrical equipment’ in September 2017.
As per use-based classification, the growth rates in primary goods was 6.6 percent in September 2017 as against September 2016, while capital goods posted a growth rates of 7.4 percent. A growth of 1.9 percent was seen in interme
diate goods, 0.5 percent in infrastructure/ construction goods.
The 'Consumer durables' and 'Consumer non-durables' have recorded growth of -4.8 percent and 10.0 percent respectively.
As per the data compiled by Projects Today, September 2017 saw record new projects investment proposals being announced after a long gap. In all 1,055 projects worth Rs 90,246 crore were announced. The Manufacturing sector saw fresh projex of Rs 26,586.75 crore followed by Electricity sector with Rs 32,337.06 crore and Services & Utilities Rs 30,384.08 crore. Continued improvement in fresh projex should ramp up the IIP from the next quarter.
