The development works of the greenfield airport coming up at Buranapura-Madabhavi villages, off Vijayapura city of Karnataka is expected to be concluded in February 2023. The project will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi once completed.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) has planned the project on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis at a total outlay of Rs 347.92 crore for phase-wise execution. An amount of Rs 222.92 crore has been earmarked for the first phase and Rs 125 crore is to be utilised during the second phase.
The work status shows that 75 percent of the work has been completed and talks are underway with airline entities for providing services.
The Karnataka government has deployed additional funds of Rs 127.92 crore to upgrade the airport to facilitate flying of Airbus-320. It will feature an aircraft apron, a singular 1.9 km runway and car parking facilities.
As per information available with Projects Today, the project will spread over 727 acres of land and comprise centrally air-conditioned domestic terminal building area of 18,500 sq m and a capacity of handling 999 peak hour passengers (500 arrival and 499 departure).
The Vijayapura airport will aid in improving the city’s connectivity as well as boost the economic development of the region.
