German engineering firm Siemens will invest Rs 186 crore to build a Metro train manufacturing facility at Aurangabad in Maharashtra. The greenfield facility will be set up by 2028 in a phased manner and will play a vital role as an export hub for metro turnkey projects.

This facility will be equipped with the latest technologies, locally procured components and skilled technical workforce, and can adapt to changing customer requirements. This is in addition to the existing bogie manufacturing facility at the same location, which was opened in November 2022, and boasts of flexible production line capable of meeting domestic and global rolling stock requirements.

Siemens has unveiled plans for a total capital expenditure of Rs 1,000 crore in the next two years to bolster its production capabilities. This initiative includes a Rs 519 crore investment to expand its gas-insulated switchgear factory in Goa, as it expands its factory footprint in the state for critical components. These products will cater to sectors such as data centers, metro rail, oil & gas, steel, and others. These initatives are in addition to capacity expansions at the power transformer factory in Kalwa and the vacuum interrupter factory in Goa.

Both factories will be leading globally benchmarked sustainable factories while also contributing to Make in India and Aatmanirbhar program through localisation. The factories are designed as per the LEED Gold standards, incorporating various sustainable technologies, such as PV solar, microgrid, EV charging, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and rainwater harvesting, recycled materials and circular construction techniques.
