Coal India (CIL) is planning to start operations at five new mines and expand capacity of at least 16 existing ones to address increasing demand for the fuel. The coal mining company plans to commence operations at the new mines, with a combined annual capacity of 14.3 MT, in the next financial year.

The company is on track to exceed its production target for the second straight year during the FY ending March. Further, it is set to boost inventories at power plants running on domestic coal by 16.1 percent year-over-year to 40 million metric tonne by end-March.

CIL aims to boost output by more than seven percent to a record 838 MT for the next FY starting 01 April, 2024, with initial stockpiles at 80 MT, over 15 percent higher from a year earlier. The firm has awarded nine projects with annual capacity of 83 MT to private companies, with another two projects capable of producing 32 MT likely to be awarded before March-end.

The company, which has been building solar and coal-fired power generating plants in efforts to diversify, is scouting for lithium assets in Australia, as India looks to secure access to minerals critical to the energy transition.
