The Central government has granted site clearance for the greenfield airport in Parandur in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) had submitted an application to the civil aviation ministry for the development at a location 70 km away from Chennai.
The state government plans to construct the greenfield airport with an investment of Rs 32,000-crore, spread across 4,000 acres with a capacity to handle 100 million passengers a year. The proposal, sent in 2023 to the Union government, was examined in consultation with Airports Authority of India (AAI), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Ministry of Defence/Indian Air Force under the Greenfield Airports (GFA) Policy, 2008. The proposal was then placed before the steering committee on Greenfield Airports, and clearance was granted on 09 July, 2024.
The responsibility of implementation of funding and land acquisition rests with TIDCO. The Parandur airport, also known to be Chennai’s second airport is expected to to make the state the best destination for investment in Asia.
